Synchronisation aspects in packet transmission

A. J. Han Vinck · 1995

Considers synchronisation and error detection problems in packet transmission. Especially, the authors investigate the problem of the determination of beginning and ending of packets. Generally, one uses a prefix of the form 01111110. By using symbol insertion, one avoids the occurrence of the same pattern in the data stream. At the receiver one applies the inverse operation. Symbol insertion or bit-stuffing is a simple but not very efficient method. The authors discuss several alternatives for this standard method and compare the relative efficiencies and complexities of implementation.
