Variable and fixed rank 1 N/sup 4/ interconnections (optical neural nets)

It is shown that full interconnection of an N*N array to an N*N output array with a rank-1 N/sup 4/-component matrix is quite straightforward for essentially all values of N. A number of applications and implementations are then described, showing that for fixed interconnect systems one can achieve small size, ruggedness, low cost, and speed.>
