On the meaning of the termprima‐faciein argumentation
Robert L. Scott · Central States Speech Journal · 1961
Every academic undertaking has its ritual words. The use of “prima‐facie”; in intercollegiate and interscholastic debating and in our textbooks indicates a mystical identification among academic arguers and may point towards the primordium of argumentation which may need re‐examination. A consideration of the meaning of the term may prove of service not only in the narrow confines of academic argumentation but may be illustrative of our general tendencies as teachers.
