A database for handwriting recognition research in Sinhala language

This article presents a database of images ofhandwritten city names. The aim is to provide a standarddatabase for Sinhala handwriting recognition research.This database contains about 15,000 images of about 500city names of Sri Lanka. These images are obtained fromthe addresses of live mail so that the writers had no ideathat they would be used for this purpose. Also, these areunconstrained handwriting images unlike the imagescollected using prescribed forms in laboratoryenvironment. The images are divided into two groups,training set and testing set. This enables the comparisonof results of different researches and serves the purposeof being a standard database.
