The use of median filters to suppress interference on signal lines

Bruno Audone, Michele Borsero, Alessandro Tacchini · 2014

In this paper various types of median filters are illustrated to show how efficiently can be used to suppress interference on signal lines. These filters have become popular in digital speech and image processing because they are of easy implementation. After a brief explanation of the standard median filter (SMF) performance characteristics other types of median filters such as the n-th ranked order filter, the recursive median filter, the alpha trimmed filter, the multi-pass median filter, the weighted median filter, the combined filter are illustrated. The comparison of their performance characteristics with respect to the moving average filter is also presented with the use of examples related to the cases of analog and digital signals.
