SQL errors: a taxonomy
A. Faye Borthick, Paul L. Bowen, R.G. Diery · 2002
This research develops a taxonomy of SQL errors, which could be used as the basis for query complexity measures and a formalization of the effects of query errors. Knowing more about the errors that users make would allow designers of query languages to see which aspects of SQL cause problems for users and thus identify how to create better query languages. Improved knowledge about query errors would assist people that train users to devise better training programs. Better characterizations of SQL errors are needed because of the growing importance of data mining and knowledge discovery in databases as the impetus for organizational decision making. The vast amounts of machine-accessible data that organizations are accumulating about their affairs are being stored in data warehouses, access to which is typically through SQL queries. Thus, it is important to know what kinds of errors users make so that they can be avoided or minimized.
