Texture isawidely usedfeature incontent- andregion-based retrieval systems. Moststudies focus ontexture extraction over anentire imageorusecolor-texture combinations forregionbased retrieval. Lessattention hasbeendrawntowards texture extraction anditsevaluation overarbitrary-shaped regions. In thispaperframe-based andregion-based texture extraction schemes arecompared toevaluate theeffect regionalization on thetexture description andretrieval performance. Experiments arecarried outusing MUVISframework, whichallows usto testandcompare several well-known texture descriptors on texture databases. The results indicate thatsignificant degradations overtheretrieval performance occuronsuch texture descriptors whenever applied on arbitrary-shaped regions.
