A perspective on managing uncertainty in geographic information systems with fuzzy sets

Vincent Β. Robinson · 2002

The knowledge based land information manager and simulator is used as the basis for providing a perspective on using fuzzy sets as the basis for managing certain kinds of uncertainty in a geographic information system. A brief perspective is presented on the implications for the terrain analysis, object model and query model of the system. Small portions of the system may exploit the rich research of fuzzy sets to address very specific problems such as model self-evaluation and control. Addressing the issue of representation and management of uncertainty at both the terrain analysis and query level leads to a process of formalizing and managing uncertainty that cascades through the system warranting changes at the object model level subsequently forcing substantial additions to the knowledge base.
