Microprocessor-based implicit RMS meter

Majid A. H. Abdul-Karim, Saleem Mohammed Ridha Taha, Safaa S. Omran · International Journal of Electronics · 1987

This paper explains the design of a microprocessor-based implicit method to measure the root-mean-square RMS value of alternating voltages. The technique used is based on the difference of squares principle. The measurement technique involves taking samples at equal time intervals through the period of the input signal. The RMS value will be measured by computation from the numerical values of simultaneous input voltage. The system does not depend on the form factor, that means the RMS value of any complex varying signal can be measured within the same accuracy. The instrument is simulated and analysed through the aid of a digital computer program. The system accuracy quoted is of ±0-1 % class. The RMS value is provided as 5 decimal digits on a display unit.
