Grobner Bases with DERIVE

Alessandro Perotti · Institutional Research Information System (Università degli Studi di Trento) · 2004

This paper describes an experiment in the use of DERIVE in learning mathematical concepts at an advanced undergraduate level. The chosen topic is the theory of Grobner bases for ideals of multivariate polynomials, a fundamental tool in computational commutative algebra with applications in many fields. The project led to the preparation of a series of DERIVEfunctions to implement the relevant algorithms for Grobner basis computation. This work in turn stimulated some research on the explicit description of monomial orderings, a key ingredient of the theory, in a form which can be easily used in computer algebra systems.
