Let a, b , c , and d be elements of a lattice L ; if, for any congruence relation Θ of L, a ≡ b (Θ) implies that c ≡ d (Θ), then we can say that “ a ≡ b forces c ≡ d ” It is necessary to understand “forcing” in order to study the structure of congruence relations of lattices; this will be accomplished in the present section.
