TOWARDS AN ONTOLOGY BASED SEARCH MECHANISM FOR THE EDMS AT CERN

CERN is building its new accelerator, the LHC. Its life-cycle dataflow is stored in the EDMS system. Due to the size of the collection and the diversity of people, organiza-tions and divisions it is difficult to find documents without prior domain knowledge. To overcome this problem, an ap-proach based on a hand-crafted domain specific ontology has been tested in order to improve information retrieval for the LHC Equipment Catalog. Experiments have shown that the use of an ontology improves average precision.
