Fault Tolerant Schemes for QCA Systems

Xiaojun Ma, Fabrizio Aghini Lombardi · 2008

Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA) is a promising nanotechnology that offers significant improvements over CMOS. QCA is limited by the high fault rate in manufacturing. New fault tolerant schemes are required to reliably assemble a system with fault-prone QCA technology. This paper analyzes and compares several fault tolerant schemes for QCA systems. It is shown that majority multiplexing (Maj-MUX) is a high capacity fault tolerant scheme specially suitable for QCA. The fault tolerant capability of QCA using Maj-MUX is investigated in detail in this work. The signal restoration speed of the Maj-MUX scheme is reported. Compared with NAND-multiplexing, the Maj-MUX can tolerate a higher fault rate and restore signals at a lower overhead.
