The ever widening gap between the storage media speeds and the processor/memory speeds has made researchers work towards bridging it in e¢ cient ways.It is now fairly clear that this gap can only be bridged to a certain extent and no further. With the advent of cheap high speed networks one could possibly think of sharing memory via these networks for cooperative caching.DEFER cache is one such idea. This idea uses a log based write back mechanism coupled with cooperative sharing of memory caches. This cache banks on the speed of the network to provide data faster than the local hard disk. The simulations show that the write back policy can help achieve a maximum speedup of 11:5x over the write-through and an average improvement of 6:7x.An implementation of this idea is attempted on a user-mode level. As can be expected the user-mode implementation is not as good as the kernel-mode.But the results indicate a speed up of 2x over a write-through baseline and an improvement of 1:5x on an average.A port of this implementation to the kernel-mode as a device driver would certainly prove to be faster.Reliabiliy data also indicates that DEFER Cache is infact a good compromise between e¢ ciency and reliability for distributed systems.i
