Dynamic routing in the AT&T network-improved service quality at lower cost

Gerald R. Ash, E. Oberer · 2003

The introduction of dynamic nonhierarchical routing (DNHR) into the AT&T switched network was completed in 1987. It has resulted in a marked improvement in AT&T network connection availability while simultaneously reducing network costs. The concept of dynamic routing and its implementation in the network over a several-year period by a multiorganizational team with AT&T are described. Dynamic routing has dramatically improved network service and robustness, particularly in responding to abnormal traffic or failure conditions. DNHR performance, systems engineering and development, and operation are discussed.>
