Cross-layer design for channel assignment with connectivity maintenance in wireless mesh networks

To improve the throughput of wireless networks and support real-time multimedia applications in multi radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks, we use the cross-layer design to develop a solution for the joint channel assignment and QoS routing problem. In this paper, we propose the channel assignment keeping the topology connectivity and present a QoS routing algorithm which selects from candidate paths considering the interference of links. In case the link load is relatively heavy and the bandwidth requirement is unsatisfied on a particular routing path, most past approaches block the connection request. Unlike previous methods, we present a novel channel assignment. Simulation results show that compared with the centralized tabu-based algorithm, the proposed algorithm achieves better performance in terms of the increase in number of radios and nodes. Also the novel channel assignment improves the bandwidth values.
