Analysis of super resolution Spectral Estimation Techniques for indoor positioning applications

Roshan Indika Godaliyadda, Hari Krishna Garg · 2008

Proper estimation of the time of arrival (TOA) parameter in any indoor positioning application is of great importance. Thus utilization of spectral estimation techniques for TOA estimation is of interest for indoor positioning research. A detailed study of the three main super resolution methods: frequency domain, time domain MUSIC (multiple signal classification) algorithms and frequency domain EV (eigen value) method, as conducted here can provide valuable insight for researchers. For possible identification of application scenarios the algorithms were subjected to bandwidth (BW) and signal to noise (SNR) variations and erroneous estimation of signal components. In addition the ldquospectral leakagerdquo phenomenon observed in the time domain MUSIC algorithm was studied as a possible alternative for low BW environments.
