Higher frequency has brought higher performance in microprocessor design. However, the trade-off between instructions per cycle and operating clock frequency has been debated for more than a decade. This paper presents a characteristic of SPEC CPU2000 benchmark in a system aspect. By measuring the performance of SPEC CPU2000 benchmark on a system with Intel PentiumD processor running at various frequencies, we examine the relationship of performance and operating frequency. We saw overall SPEC CPU2000 performance increase monotonically and linearly as the core frequency increases.
