THE ANGLE OF SEPARATION IN STOKES FLOW NEAR A SHARP CORNER

C. Hancock · The Quarterly Journal of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics · 1984

The flow of a viscous fluid is considered in the region close to a sharp corner where the Stokes approximation will be valid. The solution due to Moffatt (1) is examined and some results are derived concerning the angle at which the separating streamline leaves the rigid boundaries which form the corner. The limiting angles for which there is necessarily a succession of eddies formed in the corner are determined for the two cases of antisymmetric and symmetric flow respectively. The paper ends with a calculation of the limiting angles of separation and a comparison with some previously derived results.
