Handover algorithm analysis combined with overlap conditions

In future mobile communication systems, as the cell radius decreases the received signal average interval should be reconsidered to avoid a relatively short period of signal degradation which may reduce the call quality and even disconnect the call conversation. We investigate handover algorithms for various hysteresis window levels (HYS) and overlap conditions with analytical and simulation models. The enforced-normal handover algorithm (ENHA) is studied to show handover characteristics more closely with a strict discrimination between the call degradation conditions and handover request conditions. We describe the radio propagation model, a simulation model using a radio channel simulator and an analytical model having an assumption that the sampled and averaged signals are stationary Gaussian random variables. Comparisons are made for both long and short received signal averaging times when a modified average fade duration (mAFD) approach is combined with the handover algorithms.
