Computerized Speech Training Aids

Frederick E. Petry, Michael G. Joost · 2005

A number of display techniques, some computerized, have been used as speech training aids particularly for the deaf. These have all been d esigned to provide verbal drill without the necessity of constant teacher supervision. Recently low cost vocal i nput using isolated word recognition techniques had become available for t his type of training. A computer system is described here based on this which provides a drill in a computer-aided instruction format for simple articulation therapy. Also a discussion of work on speech output t erminals and the modification of systems from CRT displays to vocal output is presented.
