A unified congestion control strategy in ATM networks

Vincent Bemmel, Mohammad Ilyas · 2002

A new congestion control strategy is presented, that addresses the current conflict of using the 1-bit cell loss priority field in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cells for both service-oriented and congestion-oriented marking. With the new scheme, the call acceptance control, usage parameter control, and space priority functions of an ATM network will be more effective in accommodating different traffic mixtures. Consequently, the population of low priority cells can be controlled, and more efficient interworking of ATM and traditional subnetworks is possible. Through simulations the benefits of this new priority strategy over the traditional congestion control mechanism are shown.>
