Towards an adaptable QoS aware middleware for distributed objects

Aart van Halteren · 2003

Object middleware is a software infrastructure that masks distribution and technology aspects, such as the location of software components, the implementation language and underlying transport protocols. Over the past few years object middleware has become an important technology supporting distributed applications. However, current object middleware platforms only provide a best-effort Quality of Service (QoS). This book presents how to support differentiated QoS at the middleware layer, with the purpose to mask the mechanisms needed to establish and control this QoS. This leads to the notion of adaptable QoS-aware object middleware. Additionally, this book presents the design of a prototype infrastructure service, called the QoS Provisioning Service (QPS) for controlling quality concerns of object middleware.
