Video compression algorithms and cornmcrcial VLSI are surveyed. The emphasis is on hybrid and standard compression schemes. Classes of algorithms and implementations suiting the demands of a medical image network are outlined. Experience with the Digital Video Interactive (DVIB) architecture is presented.
