Performance Measurements--A Practical Example from a German University Computing Centre

R. Muchsel · The Computer Journal · 1982

A Special Interest Group of several German University Computing Centres has engaged in system tuning and system optimization. About a dozen computer installations have met regularly and exchanged information and know-how on performance measurements and their evaluation. The Special Interest Group on Systems Tuning and Optimization had several goals in mind which are discussed here. These are to get a clear understanding of performance measurements and of measurement data and their analysis; to find out whether it is possible to substantially optimize system performance on the basis of performance evaluation, and whether the effort is economically feasible. Finally, we look at what can be done to improve performance measurements and their evaluation.
