Adaptive and diversity arrays for frequency-hopping systems

Don J. Torrieri, Kesh Bakhru · 2003

The performance of an adaptive array is compared with that of an ideal diversity array for frequency-hopping systems in a mobile peer-to-peer communication network. Both independent and completely correlated Rayleigh fading at the antennas are examined. The adaptive array uses the maximin algorithm, while the diversity array uses predetection equal-gain combining with perfect cophasing. Multiple-access interference is simulated for a representative environment. It is found that the adaptive array does not provide as good a performance as the ideal diversity array. However, the compactness and the capability of the adaptive array to null strong interference or jamming may make it preferable in many mobile communication networks.
