ARQ for multi-hop networks

Matthias Lott · 2006

Multi-hop communication will be part of systems B3G. At the same time QoS is prerequisite for the efficient support of multimedia services. Specifically, the reliable end-to-end transmission in wireless multi-hop networks, comprising access points and relay nodes, is of high importance. For that reason, in this paper a new end-to-end automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol is proposed, which is coupled with an arbitrary single-hop ARQ protocol running between the access point, respectively relay node and the mobile terminal. It offers an independent ARQ optimization for the MH network with access point and fixed relay nodes, and the mobile network, i.e. last-hop. Besides the description of the challenges of the ARQ design in wireless multi-hop networks, the new multi-hop ARQ (M-ARQ) protocol and its advantages are presented.
