3 Abstract: The main purpose of the present study is to propose new formulations for soil classification by means of a promising variant of genetic programming (GP) namely, linear genetic programming (LGP) for the first time in the literature. Properties of soil namely, plastic limit, liquid limit, color of soil, percentage of gravel, sand and fine grained particles are used as input variables to the models to predict the classification of the soils. The models are developed using a reliable database obtained from the previously published literature. The results of proposed formulations are further compared with the existing models found in the literature. The results demonstrate that the LGP based formulas are able to predict the target values to high degree of accuracy.
