Ontology applications in PLM

Aristeidis Matsokis, Dimitris Kiritsis · International Journal of Product Lifecycle Management · 2011

An important factor for improving the efficiency of PLM models is the implementation of information science new tools and technologies. In this work, an ontology model of a product data and knowledge management semantic object model for PLM has been used, with the aim of implementing ontology advantages and features into the model, and to demonstrate the main capabilities the model has. The development and extension of ontology models using description logics and semantics makes the models machine-understandable. The initial model has been altered in order to facilitate new functionalities while preserving all previous capabilities. Description logics, semantic web rule language and Jess rule engine have been used to extract knowledge. Moreover, expressivity has increased allowing auto-categorisation of the input data and multi-level re-classification of the class hierarchy.
