Transformation and decomposition of the speech signal for coding

Willem Bastiaan Kleijn, Jesper Haagen · IEEE Signal Processing Letters · 1994

The speech signal is represented by an evolving characteristic waveform. The characteristic waveform is decomposed into a slowly evolving waveform and a rapidly evolving waveform, representing the quasi-periodic and other components of speech, respectively. These two evolving waveforms have fundamentally different quantization requirements. The decomposition allows efficient coding of voiced and unvoiced speech at bit rates between 2 and 8 kb/s.>
