GIS (geographical information system) is an information system to acquire, store, manage, describe and analyze the concerned spatial and geographical data of the global surface. GIS is introduced to the optical cable for communications fields such as maintenance, resources management and construction. For communications cable fault location is difficult to assign, the efficiency of maintenance is low and other issues, we design a fault location algorithm based on GIS, which can point the fault of optical cable rapidly and accurately. In this paper, according to basic working principle of OTDR, specific characteristics and requirements of cable optical communications for maintenance, we establish a GIS system of a fiber optic cable, in order to realize informationization of fiber optical cable maintenance and improve the maintenance efficiency of fiber optic cable.
