Lossless waveform compression: a case study

David M. Honea, Samuel D. Stearns · 2002

This paper has two purposes. The first is to describe a set of seismic data that has been placed in the public domain so that data compression schemes can be compared in a consistent manner, in terms of degree of compression as well as computing time. The second purpose is to provide a study of a two-stage predictive compression scheme using the standard data set. The study illustrates that the scheme can be made to approach the theoretical maximum-entropy compression limit, but also that a higher compression ratio generally requires more computing.>
