Engine Variability Impact on Reduced Order Thrust Estimation Filters

A reduced order lter for jet engine thrust estimation has been developed. The employed technique involves both a reduction of the jet engine process model and the use of a reduced order observer. The engine model reduction was performed by removing the high frequency modes using a singular perturbation technique. The reduced observer was derived from the fact that the rotational speed measurements are far more accurate than available pressure and temperature recordings. The performance of the reduced order lter has been compared with the performance of a Kalman lter. The robustness to engine to engine variability on the thrust estimation has been studied by means of a Monte Carlo simulation, using a non-linear simulation model of the RM12 jet engine.
