Performance of a traffic smoothing switching element

Abstract This paper investigates a switching element which transforms a non‐uniform traffic distribution over the inputs of a switch into a uniform one. The switching element consists of an output buffered matrix switch equipped with non synchronized counters at the input lines for output selection. By means of a combinatorial analysis the desired property of the component is proved. Moreover, it is shown that no losses occur if the number of buffer places equals the number of input lines. Simulation results reveal the excellent performance of the device under various traffic conditions.
