Combinations of finite state line codes and error correcting codes

We develop two methods for combining finite state line codes and error correcting codes, a state-splitting method for finite state encoders with variable rate and a Gray code like numbering of constrained sequences. The method can be used to prevent severe error propagation caused by using long code words.
