BOZ: Task-analytic design and evaluation of visual displays

Stephen M. Casner · 2002

BOZ is an automated graphic design and presentation tool that designs visual displays based on an analysis of the task which a display is intended to support. BOZ analyzes a logical description of a procedure to be performed by a human user and designs an equivalent perceptual procedure by substituting perceptual inferences in place of logical inferences in the procedure. BOZ then designs and renders an accompanying visual display, encoding and structuring data in the display such that the performance of each perceptual operator is supported and visual search is minimized. A second component of BOZ allows the logical and perceptual procedures to be used directly as simulations to generate theoretical predictions about the effectiveness of a display with respect to a task.>
