Abstract The convergence characteristics of a stereophonic echo canceler using preprocessing are analyzed. The convergence of the expectation value of the filter coefficient errors is analyzed and the relationship is found between the characteristics of the preprocessed filter and the convergence properties. The uniqueness of the solution is also analyzed in the frequency domain. From these analyses, the characteristics to be provided in the preprocessed filter are identified. It is shown that the convergence characteristics can be improved by using a quadratic all‐pass filter for preprocessing. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
