A fast simulation method for dynamic forest in wind

Hongqian Chen, Yuehong Sun, Yi Chen, Jian Cao · 2011

To achieve the dynamic scene of the large scale forest in wind, proposes a fast simulation method based on composite texture. The method renders the tree model using billboard and 2D tree image texture. The dynamic effect is obtained by updating the different tree texture real time. The control mesh of deformation is built along with the trunk of the tree. The method obtains the deformation result via updating the shape of the control mesh. The tree is deformed according to the current wind condition and its windward area. The method obtains the dynamic effect of forest under the wind force via deforming the tree image using image deformation technology. The deformation results in different wind condition are pre-processed and are integrated into the composite texture. The textures of billboards are dynamic updated during simulating. The capacity of simulating real time is enhanced by the composite texture. The method has been proved feasible and valid to simulate the large scale dynamic forest scene containing thousands of trees in more than 30 FPS by our experiments.
