An extended packet reservation multiple access protocol for wireless multimedia communication

Yalun Li, Steinar Hidle Andresen · 2002

We present an extended packet reservation multiple access (EPRMA) protocol for wireless multimedia services. It supports multi-bit-rate reservation, dynamic slot and frequency carrier association, and an effective contention mechanism. The improved link utilisation is achieved by burst traffic statistically multiplexed on a wide bandwidth. Simulation study shows the significant increase in trunking efficiency. Principles of traffic control and resource management are suggested. Simulation results for homogeneous traffic multiplexing are presented. It shows how the maximum link utilisation is influenced by source utilisation, average burst length and peak-to-link ratio. It is concluded that higher bandwidth utilisation can only be achieved when peak-to-link ratios for a sufficient portion of the traffic are far smaller than 0.1. With this knowledge, the admission control function accepts connections according to their statistical parameters, so that both QOS and network performance are guaranteed.
