Evolution of broadband network services-A North American perspective

A scenario for the evolution of broadband public network services is identified based on analysis of end-user requirements. This evolution will be driven initially by increasing demand for high-performance data communications in the corporate environment. The service introduction phase is described, in which broadband virtual private network services are provided as an alternative to dedicated facilities. The ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) technology is analyzed to define the flexible network infrastructure which will allow the introduction and evolution of the broadband services. The requirements for the ATM network infrastructure are addressed including operations and management, performance, traffic control, and interworking.>
