A prototype video dissemination application over ATM

George C. Polyzos, K. Taylor · 2002

The authors have developed a prototype interactive video distribution application in an ATM environment to investigate the effectiveness of their open-loop approach to continuous media dissemination. They advocate using a time-driven rather than data-driven presentation approach and layered coding for increasing the statistical multiplexing gain of the network and for efficiently supporting heterogeneous receivers. They present measurements demonstrating that independently-received signal components do not cause significant communication overhead while improving tolerance to rising host system load and network delay and jitter. They also discuss the impact of these techniques on application programming.
