Issues related to the structure and performance of parallel applications in a production environment

The Perfect Benchmark suite was an attempt to assemble a realistic collection of application codes which could be used by computer scientists for performance evaluation, exploration of new architectural features, and testing compiler technologies. This paper surveys the origin, use, and inherent biases in the suite.
