The paper presents methods for practical punctured LDPC codes that are either regular or irregular at small block lengths (a few thousand bits). The suggested designs use small sub-matrices to generate code words. The variable code rate is achieved by deciding the mount of puncturing based on the smallest number of '1'. The use of patterned sub matrices greatly reduces the memory requirement for coding and puncturing.
