Satellites provide the natural choice for communication in both areas. However, there are problems if the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), as required for Internet access, is used as the transport layer protocol. The best performance over a satellite link occurs when large packet sizes and large window numbers are employed. This indicates that TCP protocol modification, such that the satellite link transmits long segments, is the most efficient use of satellite resources.
