Baseband Excitation of the Formant Vocoder

S. Joseph Campanella · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1966

This paper presents the results of recent experiments into the baseband excitation of the formant vocoder for use at data rates of 2400 and 4800 bit/sec. Among the various techniques that have been considered are the use of 1-, 2-, and 3-bit amplitude sampling of the voice-excitation baseband from 200 to 700 cps at rates compatible with the fulfillment of the total-data-rate objectives of 2400 and 4800 bit/sec, respectively. The paper is accompanied by tape recordings of system performance at the above data rates and sampling conditions.
