Interpreter/compiler integration in ECL

As mentioned in [1], a primary design objective of the ECL programming system [2, 3] has been to maximize the flexibility afforded its user, particularly during the design and debugging of his programs, without sacrificing the efficiency of his final product. The programmer is given the facility first to tailor the system to his needs, then to shed unneeded variability in exchange for increased efficiency.
