Summary form only given. Preliminary research results have been obtained which indicate that neural networks represent a promising approach for use in intelligent tutoring systems (ITS). A neural network was used to analyze learner responses to subject matter posed by a second language tutor and to classify learners into different language competence and motivational categories. An ITS could use this kind of information to modify its presentation of lesson content to be more appropriate for a learner's cognitive state.>
