Direct Data Transfer Between Two Remote Imass Storage Devices Over A T1 Line

Timothy Sichler, A. Armand · 2005

A novel microprocessor-based system that acts as a serial interfaco, between a mass storage device and a high speed communication line is described. This systen-, can effectively replace the functions of a mainframe cornputermd its associated front-end processor, in bulk file transfer between two remote mass slora e devices. As a result, it provides a highly cost efficient means for remote backup and electronic offsite storage that co-aid greatly enhance the data processing centers' disaster recovery-plans. The system consists of two microprocessors, interface logic, memory, and communication controller. It converts parallel data available at the interface of the mass storage device into serial format with SDLC protocol which is ready to be transmitted over serial communication facilities having speeds up to the TI transmission rate of 1.544 Mbps. Details of the s-ystem's hardware and software design will be discussed and experimental result on a prototype system will be presented.
