Network Performance Monitoring And Fault Detection On The Gtnet

Peter Mathis, B.C. Kim · 2005

The Georgia Tech campus network (GTNet) currently serves about 10,OOO users. The network exists in a multi-vendor environment and is based on the TCP/IP protocol suite. Effective network monitoring tools which can assist in monitoring performance, link usage, and faults are being developed. This paper describes the current status of the network manage:ment of the GTNet. The paper also describes the application of SNh4P (Simple Network Management Protocol) and its flaws on the network management. A new network management protocol, called Passive Listening, has been developed and is presented here with comparisons to the current SNMP.
