A Multidisciplinary Approach to UAV Planning in Civilian Airspace

Iain A. McManus, Rodney Walker · AIAA Guidance, Navigation, and Control Conference and Exhibit · 2004

An exciting new stage in the development and deployment of unmanned aircraft platforms is emerging. Seamless UAV operation, within the civilian airspace environment, is becoming more of a necessity than simply a desirable attribute. One aspect of seamless UAV operations in civilian airspace is the digital representation of airspace boundaries, and the automatic planning and interaction with these boundaries, by the UAV. This paper presents a multidisciplinary approach to the UAV airspace planning problem. The methodology presented incorporates planning and navigation techniques from the robotics field and spatial interaction techniques from the 3D computer graphics industry. This paper will show that the fusion of these technologies will provide the UAV with the capability to dynamically plan missions that respect airspace boundaries.
